Essex Meadows Powers on Three-Part Solar System

3 Part Solar Power System

Essex, CT retirement community hits clean energy trifecta with solar developer Verogy

(Hartford, CT – June 22nd, 2021) –   Verogy Solar, a Hartford-based solar developer dedicated to delivering industry-leading renewable energy solutions today announced that that Essex Meadows in Essex, CT has energized their newly-constructed three-part solar energy project. The 587 kW of energy produced by the solar system is the equivalent of powering 57 average homes annually.  The project is expected to produce nearly 700,000 kWh of clean energy every year which equals the avoidance of 494 metric tons of carbon dioxide or the same amount of carbon that would be sequestered by 646 acres of forest in one year.

The project consists of solar components installed in three locations at Essex Meadows: a rooftop system, ground mounted panels, and one-of-a-kind wooden beam carport system. Built to blend in with the picturesque Essex landscape, the wooden beams of the carport resemble a classic carriage house—with the solar panels atop and EV charging stations below providing a modern twist.  The solar project is just the latest example of Essex Meadows’ long-standing commitment to sustainability which includes high efficiency geothermal heating and cooling, irrigation using non-potable water, a comprehensive recycle program and more.

Verogy presented on the project on June 10th to the members of the Essex Meadows Green Committee, as well as residents and staff, outlining the environmental, financial, and community benefits that the solar array will create.

“Essex Meadows has a long history of embracing environmental innovation,” said William Herchel, Chief Executive Officer of Verogy.  “We were pleased to have the opportunity to bring clean energy to this great community and its residents.”

“We are so happy to have found a solar energy solution that compliments the beauty of our grounds. Working with Verogy has proved to be a win-win,” said Jennifer Rannestad, Executive Director of Essex Meadows.

The solar arrays are owned by Essex Meadows and as a result, the community will receive all ZREC (Zero Emission Renewable Energy Credit) benefits as well as the utility savings the panels generate. Over the 35-year lifetime of the systems, Essex Meadows can expect to see a net cumulative benefit of over $4 million.
