35 Years of Dedication

Featuring Alyce Davis
Written by: Sharon DeGroat, Director of Environmental Services
Alyce Davis became part of the Environmental Service Department in January 1989.
She is resolute, hardworking and one of our strongest team members. There has not been a moment when she did not go beyond the call of duty. Alyce has always inspired her team members and is a shining example for everyone.
Alyce Davis was born on a farm in Michigan. Her parents were teachers, and she was one of four children. Alyce developed strong work ethics at an early age by helping her parents with their farm.
Alyce attended Alpena Community College and took a position working at National Geographic.
She met her future husband Mark when he was in the military and stationed in Michigan. After getting married they moved to his home state of Connecticut.
They purchased a home in Old Lyme where they live with their two Savannah cats.
Alyce started working as a housekeeper at the Inn at Mystic. It was there that she met Janice Longton, who was the head housekeeper. When Jan Longton took a supervisor position at Essex Meadows, she asked Alyce to join her. That was thirty-five years ago.
Throughout the years Alyce has forged great relationships with our residents, whether they reside in their apartments independently or with nursing care in the Health Center.
As Alyce’s Director, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with her for 23 years. There has not been a moment when Alyce did not show her dedication and positive outlook.
At the onset of Covid-19, Alyce volunteered to work in the Health Center where she learned and managed the ever-changing DPH standards and guidelines. She often worked overtime ensuring there was always coverage on the Covid wing. I will always be grateful for her sense of humor and her amazing ability to persevere.
Thank You Alyce for all your contributions to our community and all the great relationships you have formed with staff and residents.
“Alyce is at the heart of our EVS team — a natural leader whose wisdom and problem-solving skills keep everything running smoothly. She looks after everyone, making sure we’re safe and well cared for, ensuring team members have a place to stay during snowstorms. She lifts our spirits with her humor and extends her kindness to the whole community through her work with her community outreach. Her generosity, intelligence, and warmth make every day at Essex Meadows brighter.”
