Quiet Excellence: The Story of Willer Guillaume

Written by: Matt Whitbeck, Director of Food & Beverage
Willer Guillaume started at Essex Meadows in 2018. He came to the United States from Haiti in 2017, brought here by his sister, Elina, who took him under her wing. It was Elina who informed Willer about an open utility position at Essex Meadows. He was interviewed and hired by Chef Steve, and it quickly became evident that Willer possessed a tremendous work ethic.
It was later shared that Willer’s strong work ethic began at a very young age. In Haiti, Willer was the youngest sibling among three sisters, and at just 13 years old, he was responsible for caring for the family’s cow, goat, and mule. His dedication and sense of responsibility did not go unnoticed. A cousin recognized Willer’s potential and took him on as a carpentry apprentice.
Willer quickly learned the carpentry and construction trades and went on to help build beautiful, detailed homes in Haiti, including his sister Elina’s home.
This craftsmanship, attention to detail, and pride in his work are evident every day in Willer’s responsibilities at Essex Meadows.
When asked what he enjoys doing when he is not at work, Willer simply replied that he “finds more work.” Even on his days off, he stays busy shoveling snow in the winter, landscaping and doing carpentry in the summer, and often lending a hand in his sister’s garden. Willer has three children—Gecika, Patrice, and William— and one grandson, Gavi, with another grandson expected in March. Willer is reserved and modest, often letting his actions speak louder than words. Willer communicates through his hard work, his willingness to help others, and his consistent dedication.
“He shows up early, stays late, and never once has asked for the spotlight. The kitchen runs because quiet legends like him carry it on their shoulders.”-Steve Pont Executive Chef
Most recently, Willer achieved a significant milestone by becoming a United States citizen at the end of last year—an accomplishment that reflects his perseverance and determination.
Willer’s dedication to Essex Meadows, his strong work ethic, and his commitment to his family and community are why we are proud to nominate him for the Little Things Awards.
